Living and working as a craftsman in the North Shore area of Chicago, I’m constantly inspired by the architecture, historic spaces, and artistic culture that surround me. There’s a strong appreciation for timeless craftsmanship here—whether it’s in the intricate details of a historic home, a beautifully designed park, or a boutique that values artistry as much as I do. Here are some of my favorite places in Glencoe, Winnetka, Highland Park, Bannockburn, and Wilmette that always leave me feeling connected to the traditions of fine workmanship.
Glencoe
Writers Theatre – I love the design of Writers Theatre, a beautiful collaboration between community and craftsmanship. Designed by Studio Gang Architects, it’s a space that blends wood, glass, and steel in a way that feels both intimate and monumental. Walking through it reminds me why thoughtful design matters—it’s all about creating experiences.
Glencoe Historic District – This neighborhood is filled with Prairie School architecture, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. I enjoy strolling these streets and admiring the understated yet detailed craftsmanship of early 20th-century homes. It’s a constant reminder of the power of custom design rooted in tradition.
Winnetka
The Winnetka Community House – An architectural gem, the Community House has been serving the town for over a century. I appreciate its classic lines, fine masonry, and the way it brings people together—craftsmanship, after all, is about community as much as it is about creation.
Skokie Lagoons – While primarily known for outdoor recreation, the hand-built stone bridges and natural landscaping at Skokie Lagoons show a different kind of craftsmanship: working with the land instead of against it. It’s a place where artistry meets nature.
Highland Park
Ravinia Festival Grounds – Ravinia isn’t just about the music; the grounds themselves are meticulously maintained and thoughtfully designed. Every time I visit, I’m inspired by the natural wood elements, beautiful pergolas, and pavilions that show true craftsmanship.
Highland Park’s Architectural Tours – Highland Park offers self-guided tours of its Mid-Century Modern and Prairie Style homes. Seeing these properties, many of which are meticulously preserved or restored, always gives me new ideas for blending function and form in my own projects.
Bannockburn
Private Estate Architecture – Bannockburn is filled with sprawling estates featuring exquisite custom millwork, wrought iron gates, and stone masonry. Although many are private, driving through this community reminds me of the beauty and permanence that only handcrafted details can bring.
Bannockburn Green Shopping Center – It might seem simple, but I admire the subtle, thoughtful design of this small shopping center. Built with stone, brick, and wood, it has a warm, timeless feel that prioritizes craftsmanship even in commercial spaces.
Wilmette
Bahá’í House of Worship – This is one of my absolute favorite places. The level of detail in the stone carving and the overall design is nothing short of awe-inspiring. It’s a true testament to what artisans can achieve with vision, dedication, and skill.
Wilmette Theatre – A smaller venue, but one with a lot of heart and historic charm. I appreciate the theater’s ongoing restoration efforts that respect its original craftsmanship while adapting it for modern use.
Final Thoughts
What I love most about the North Shore is its deep respect for design, heritage, and craftsmanship. Every city has its own flavor, yet they all share a common thread: an appreciation for artistry that stands the test of time. Whether I’m working on a new built-in, crafting custom cabinetry, or simply taking a walk, these places fuel my passion for creating work that is lasting, beautiful, and meaningful.
